“Cutting” is a machining process in which an object in a drawing is created by cutting away (removing) unnecessary portions from a piece of material by means of a cutting tool. The removed portions are then discharged to the outside of the machine as cutting chips. Effective chip handling is a critical issue for machine tool operations. In particular, as chips are a major hindrance to automation and directly affect machining quality, reliable chip control is essential.
This article presents some examples of effective chip handling in the drilling of aluminum alloy, which tends to generate long, tangled chips.
