Waste Management

Basic concept

Due to the unique characteristics of our business, DMG MORI Group production processes generate waste. We therefore believe that taking initiatives to reduce the amount of waste produced can lead to more efficiently using procured materials and energy resources required for business, and can contribute to preserving the environment. Furthermore, the DMG MORI Group attempts to make effective use of resources and engages in efforts to manage, reduce, and recycle waste, so that we can effectively use and recycle limited resources as we work toward realizing a sustainable recycling-oriented society.

Specific initiatives

In addition to reducing the amount of waste generated at our plants, each employee at DMG MORI makes a conscious effort to reduce and sort trash. We also ensure appropriate recycling routes and work toward recycling waste.

Use the heat generated when burning as energy (thermal recycling).
Crushed wood is reused as wood chips, which are used as fuel.
Dissolve and reuse as toilet paper.
Oil separation allows waste oil to be recycled into heavy fuel oil.

Cooperating in investigative research on ocean microplastics

DMG MORI cooperates in investigative research on ocean microplastics, through the work of the DMG MORI SAILING TEAM. For example, DMG MORI Global One (which had participating in Vendée Globe 2020-2021, from November 2020 to February 2021) took samples of ocean microplastics while racing in six locations (including the Antarctic Ocean) not often traveled by standard ships or ocean research ships. These samples were then provided to the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) to aid in the organization's investigative research.

Filter for collecting microplastics samples

Ocean plastics investigative research process

  • 1. Install special filters to collect microplastics samples during race
    * A 300 μm plankton net is used for the filter
  • 2. Pack up used filters and store them until they can be analyzed (sampling period along with information including the route traveled)
  • 3. After the race, provide collected samples to JAMSTEC for investigative research
