“Hida no Takumi” - Masterful Japanese Craftsmanship that never ceases to improve productivity
through proactive maintenance with my DMG MORI

シェア

UTSUE SEIKI CO., LTD. was founded in 1951 in Hida Takayama. The company started as a general manufacturer of machine, camera, and motor parts and specialized on hydraulic parts around 1970. Today, the company supplies high-precision hydraulic parts to Japanese and overseas manufacturers of hydraulic equipment, construction machinery, and industrial machinery. The strength of UTSUE SEIKI is their efficient production system that allows them to perform machining, assembly and quality inspections under one roof. Dating back to the 1950s, UTSUE SEIKI has cultivated sophisticated technical knowhow and has also been a prominent user of high-precision machine tools. DMG MORI machines have played an essential role in their production since the 1980s, amounting to 150 machines in operation today. Only in the last three years, UTSUE SEIKI has invested in nine NHX 4000 horizontal machining centers to further increase its production capacity. “The various hydraulic valves, pumps, and motor parts that we produce need to fulfill very high standards in regard to roundness and cylindricity. We require micrometer-precision. The NHX 4000 with its 15,000 min-1 speedMASTER spindle enables fast and highly accurate machining. The compact pallet pool system CPP allows flexible machining of multiple workpiece types and has been highly useful for our high-mix low-volume production.”, says Mr. Nobuo Utsue, the president of UTSUE SEIKI.

“Hida no Takumi” is a well-known title to praise master craftsmen in Japan. UTSUE SEIKI is headquartered in Hida Takayama, the place of origin of the title where the spirit of excellent craftsmanship resides.

The Zero Sludge Coolant Tank significantly reduces maintenance work and improves productivity

UTSUE SEIKI continues to expand its facilities and currently operates a total of more than 500 machine tools, out of which around 150 require repair each month. The high machine number leads to higher output, but also makes maintenance and repair work a major issue. Therefore, UTSUE SEIKI has established a dedicated department for maintenance around 2010, which has six members today. Mr. Utsue smiled as he said: “For efficient production, it is important to minimize machine downtime as much as possible. DMG MORI offers quick repair and recovery services, and I feel that the products themselves are designed to reduce maintenance work to begin with.”
UTSUE SEIKI is especially satisfied with the effects of the Zero Sludge Coolant Tank used in the NHX 4000. “We process FC and FCD materials on our horizontal machining centers. In the past, three of our workers needed to spend a whole day every six months per machine to clean the coolant tanks. However, with the Zero Sludge Coolant Tank, the cleaning can be completed by one person in only half a day. The tank's structure and mechanism efficiently prevents sludge accumulation, so cleaning is only required once every 18 months to two years.”, explains Mr. Shinsaku Kobayashi, the factory manager.
In addition, UTSUE SEIKI has been using my DMG MORI for their machine maintenance. DMG MORI launched the membership-based online service in 2020.

my DMG MORI allows us to share videos and images of defects directly with DMG MORI’s service center, making it possible to fix problems much faster than before. In addition, the repair history is automatically saved for each machine. We can save time and share information more easily.

With more than 500 machine tools in operation, maintenance work has been a major challenge for UTSUE SEIKI. Now, the company utilizes my DMG MORI for efficient machine management and quick service requests. my DMG MORI is the membership-based online service launched by DMG MORI in 2020.

Service requests with my DMG MORI make it possible to share images and videos of machine failures, allowing for quicker recoveries

my DMG MORI is a membership-based portal site that directly connects customers with DMG MORI through a network and is available to any user of DMG MORI products. my DMG MORI provides customers with comprehensive machine information and offers a variety of support services related to machining and maintenance. UTSUE SEIKI has been making particular good use of the “Service Request” function. Service Request allows customers to send images, videos and other data of machine defects directly to DMG MORI’s Service Center. “With my DMG MORI, we can share the movements of pressure gauges and ATC, or the noise during malfunctions easily via video. This significantly reduces the time required for explanations over the phone and the number of telephone calls. In the past, DMG MORI’s service engineers needed to visit us each time when a problem could not be explained on the phone. Now, the cause of a problem can often be identified through the video data and direct visits are not always required anymore. my DMG MORI has definitely reduced our machine downtimes by at least one day, so productivity has been improved.”, says Mr. Makoto Tanaka, Section Manager of the Production Engineering Department in charge of machine maintenance. Mr. Yuichi Teraji of the Production Engineering Department also commented on the user-friendly design of my DMG MORI: “my DMG MORI also allows us to check the progress status, making it easier to make production plans based on repair schedules. Another convenient aspect of it is that you can easily make inquiries by simply selecting the machine model or the location of the problem on the screen.”

Quick access to repair history and manuals & New service to order parts from drawings

Most machine failures repeat themselves, so quick access to the repair history is essential for quick recovery. Mr. Tanaka explains: “my DMG MORI stores your DMG MORI machine information, so the repair history can be viewed immediately and recurring problems can be addressed quickly. I feel that this has cut our workload by half. With the automatic registration of repair information we do not need to use time for data management and can quickly share information.” Mr. Teraji also commented on the positive effects of my DMG MORI: “The manuals and specifications of our machines are registered as PDF data, and we can instantly refer to the necessary pages. This is quicker than paper-based checks and saves us a significant amount of time.” The new service of my DMG MORI “Parts Selector”, which was launched in August 2022, has also been well received. “Until now, we had to make phone calls to order parts based on the part number. This was difficult when a part number was unknown. With the Parts Selector such problems belong to the past. We can simply make orders by selecting the necessary parts from the drawings and history, which saves time. We hope that more useful functions like this are added to my DMG MORI in the future. We would be happy if we could see videos of repair methods or if the Chatbot could give us more sophisticated answers.”, explained Mr. Tanaka and Mr. Teraji. President Utsue also has high expectations for my DMG MORI, which continues to evolve to meet customer needs. He shared his outlook with us: “We will further focus on preventive maintenance to improve our productivity. We will continue to use my DMG MORI to manage our maintenance proactively.”
