The ideal 5-axis machine
for precise machining of hard-to-cut material and 24-hour machine operation

The material used for pliers is hard-to-machine martensitic stainless steel. This special material is also used for automotive shafts and bearings and generally does not suit complex machining. Nevertheless, it is frequently used in the medical field for the following two reasons.

Firstly, medical instruments must ensure a wide field of view for the doctor, and not affect other areas than lesions. This demands complex-shaped, minimally-sized but resilient instruments. Since it is impossible to meet this requirement with common material, tough material is applied.
Secondly, as blood gets easily stuck on the instruments during surgery, corrosion-resistant material is necessary. This makes stainless steel the perfect choice.

Mr. Nobuhisa Sakurai, General Manager of the Development Department, explains why they introduced the new machinery: “Our company machines the martensitic stainless steel SUS4202J2. Machining of this hard-to-cut material with high accuracy requires a highly-rigid machine. Additionally, the machine needs to be automation ready to fulfill our goal of high-speed and 24-hour machining. The solution to all of our requirements was DMG MORI’s 5-axis machine NMV 3000 DCG for small-sized workpiece machining, together with an AWC (Automatic Workpiece Changer).”

The AWC with maximum 114 pallets enabled 24-hour production. Mr. Katsumi Sato, Chief of Production Division, is a witness of the high productivity: “As we saw the machine perform stably and without any problems, we decided to buy a second NMV 3000 DCG two years later. We needed higher production capacity to handle the steady increase of inquiries from overseas.

In the beginning, YDM used NMV for both machining of pliers’ box joint (surface matching) and precision machining of a blade’s tip. However, box joint machining only requires a 3-axis machine. Therefore, to use their 2 NMVs to their fullest potential, machining of a box joint and a tip should be assigned to different machines.

YDM considered the machining of a box joint on a 3-axis machine and the time-consuming precision machining of a blade tip on 2 NMVs. For 24-hour machining of a box joint, an AWC must be equipped with the 3-axis machine. “We also looked into 3-axis machines of other makers for box joint machining. However, CMX 600 V with AWC turned out the best choice, as it supports the same pallets as NMVs. The size perfectly fits our factory, too,” explains Mr. Toru Miyazato, Deputy General Manager, Production Department, about the selection process. (Continued in Vol.3)
