Elliott Group

Feeling benefits of “visualization”
Unexpected, advantageous effects
brought by the visualization product! [Part 2]

Mr. Masahiro Kashiwai, General Manager at the Production Engineering Department

The Elliot Group employed the visualization tool to visualize the equipment operation management and effects of automation. In this article, Mr. Kashiwai shares unexpected effects that the product brought not only for the management, but for operators.

Significant merit not only for the management - what are the advantages of visualization for the operators?

When the DMG MORI Messenger was installed, there were concerned voices raised from operators that it is like they are constantly monitored. From the standpoint of the management side, they made the decision in hope of creating an opportunity for its staff to think more about efficiency of setup time and programming time.

Now the concerned voice is not heard. And operators are using the giant display in the factory to check the data of multiple machines. As they have become more conscious of efficient machine operation time, each staff now sets his/her own goal to reduce setup time.

Communication about operation such as program changes became clear between the management side and operators

Furthermore, the DMG MORI Messenger enables not only visualization of the operation rate, but also recording of the override history. This prevents programs from being modified without the administrator knowing about it.
With the visualization tool, the administrator can check the history when programs have been changed.

“We humans work for eight hours, while machine operates round-the-clock. We want to build a healthy workplace that can boast high productivity without stress.”

The company is faced with various changes recently, such as the retirement of veteran engineers, increase in mid-career recruitment, shorter delivery times, and ERP system reform.

“In such a transition time, we continue to evolve, responding to the changes flexibly, and achieve the kind of shop operation where ‘experience and know-how’ and ‘data’ work together,” Mr. Kashiwai explains the company’s goal.

“If we rely on experience in every scene, there will be more workload placed on certain employees. But if we count too much on data alone, the company may lose the advantages of having skilled people,” he says.

“We humans work for eight hours, while machine operates round-the-clock. We want to build a healthy workplace that can boast high productivity without stress.”

The Elliott Group continues to take on challenges.
