A large proportion of ZF’s business is concerned with developing and building transmissions for almost all well-known automobile manufacturers. As a leading technology group in drivetrain and chassis technology, the company responds to increasing demand with highly automated production.
The most recent example at the Friedrichshafen facility is a production line that manufactures 750 transmissions per day – from aluminium die castings to fully inspected and leak-tested finished parts. Ten DMC 80 H linear machines are crucial to this high capacity. DMG MORI designed these high-precision and fast machining centres so that they can be perfectly integrated into production lines using a portal materials handling system.
“The excellent reliability of the DMC 80 H linear, its precision and flexible use in the production process were decisive arguments”, said Uwe Wachter from ZF, who is responsible for machine scheduling, when explaining the reasons behind the investment. The machining centres carry out two manufacturing operations and each housing needs to be reclamped just once – also automatically. Well-thought-out chip removal ensures smooth machining. Uwe Wachter added. “This is the only way that we can permanently work in the μm range”. And flexibility is also ensured: “We can isolate individual machining centres from the production line at any time and deploy them for separate orders”.
Uwe Wachter, Head of Machine Scheduling at ZF, is impressed with the reliability and precision of the DMC 80 H linear machining centres.
