Founded in 1977, HATTORI ENGINEERING Co.Ltd. is an industrial component manufacturer operating out of Toyohashi in Aichi Prefecture. The company is involved in manufacturing motor parts for major electronics manufacturers, as well as parts for machine tools, computer equipment, medical equipment, and testing equipment. It is also involved in rivet coating. In addition to mass-produced products, the company also specializes in high-mix low-volume production tailored to customer requirements, and its track record of developing clever solutions and applying its advanced technical capabilities to design products and propose technical improvements has earned it the trust of many companies. Under its motto of "creating what customers need," the company continues to invest in its facilities, having recently installed its first 5-axis machines: DMU 50 3rd Generation.
Tools can be attached properly by anyone. Easily achieve the highest levels of machining conditions
The "Power Clamp" shrink fit machine makes it possible for anyone to quickly and properly fit tools, and this has really helped us to get work done quicker. We use "Shrink Fit Chuck," a type of shrink fit holder made by HAIMER, along with DMU 50 3rd Generation to do work that's even more accurate than what we were doing with a 3-axis machining center.

"Shrink Fit Chuck" is a shrink fit holder that is highly durable with excellent gripping force and run-out accuracy. "Power Clamp" is a shrink fit machine that makes it easy to attach and remove tools, dramatically reducing time spent on setup and the need for expert workers.
The company makes use of more than 100 HAIMER shrink fit holders with its two 5-axis machines. Power Clamp has a heating time of approximately five seconds, for quick heating and cooling.
The company uses its DMU 50 3rd Generation machines together with HEIMER "Shrink Fit Chuck" shrink fit holders and a "Power Clamp" shrink fit machine to work quickly and accurately.
Power Clamp easily and quickly attaches and removes tools, to achieve machining conditions at a high level
HATTORI ENGINEERING had previously used collet chucks for tooling, but was having issues with tool edge run-out accuracy, and setup required the work of expert workers. Workers also needed to be able to make fine corrections and adjustments, such as test cutting. Finally, tooling was causing trouble with machining. "We were running into issues with tool looseness and run-out. We wasted a lot of time on tool changes, as we had to retighten tools several times. We were also getting different levels of accuracy from different operators," explains President and CEO Yutaka Hattori.
It is at this point the company began using HEIMER "Shrink Fit Chuck" shrink fit holders and a "Power Clamp" shrink fit machine, with the goal of reducing setup time and delivering consistent accuracy regardless of operator. "Other companies in our industry are really struggling with tooling. We thought we could use shrink fit holders and a shrink fit machine to dramatically improve our issues with tooling and gain a competitive edge, since we specialize in high-mix low-volume production here at HATTORI ENGINEERING," explains Mr. Hattori.
Shrink fit holders dramatically reduced setup time and machining time
HEIMER shrink fit holders contain fewer components than collet chucks, and are highly durable. The surface area holding the tool is wider, for excellent tool gripping force. This allows for even rough machining to be performed without any problem, dramatically reducing machining time. "It has excellent gripping force, so we can use even fine tools reliably without any looseness or run-out," explains Mr. Hattori. Even the machine operators were impressed. "We're using cutting conditions 1.5 times higher than those of our old 3-axis machining centers. The HEIMER shrink fit holders are slimmer than other holders, so they don't interfere with the workpiece as much and can even enter up against a wall, for expanded machining width."
The cooling function of the Power Clamp shrink fit machine ensures consistent contraction, so that tools can be held accurately. It is capable of high run-out accuracy without requiring setup by expert workers, which not only increases machining accuracy but can extend tool life. "Anyone regardless of skill can attach and remove tools, so we're able to operate under higher machining conditions. Heating and cooling is quick, so we've also been able to significantly reduce setup time. What's really great is that we don't need to do test cuts anymore, because we can get the cut we want on the first try, which reduces machining time" adds Mr. Hattori.
"Shrink Fit Chuck" shrink fit holders work great with 5-axis machines, for mutual performance gains
Mr. Hattori has been quite pleased with the company's new DMU 50 3rd Generation 5-axis machines. "DMU 50 3rd Generation is much more durable and accurate than other machine tools. We thought that it would be less durable and not capable of cutting as accurately as a 3-axis vertical machining center, due to the higher number of axes, but I'm glad to say that we were completely wrong about that. We're very impressed at how extremely accurate it is and how well it cuts. It gave us a new appreciation for how wonderful DMG MORI products are."
In discussing their solution, Mr. Hattori focused especially on the mutual benefits of combining DMU 50 3rd Generation together with "Shrink Fit Chuck" shrink fit holders and the "Power Clamp" shrink fit machine. "Using Shrink Fit Chuck with DMU 50 3rd Generation, we're able to get highly accurate machining done on our first attempt, dramatically reducing machining time. We can now handle a wide range of workpiece shapes quickly, and our customers trust us even more now."
The company plans to add more 5-axis machines capable of highly accurate machining, including DMU 50 3rd Generation, and ultimately prepare its factory to support the coming age of digital twin technology. "We've already taken the first step, by reorganizing our factory to suit the excellent design of DMU 50 3rd Generation. We want to let our customers know that HATTORI ENGINEERING can handle complex shapes even more flexibly and quickly than before, and hope that more of our customers will come to us with challenging machining projects," explains Mr. Hattori.
