LASERTEC 30 SLM meets Solar Cars! DMG MORI AM parts used in 3,000-km race

International Solar Car Race “Bridgestone World Solar Challenge”

The Wakayama University Solar Car Team will join the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, an international solar car race to be held in Australia in October 2023, with a vehicle equipped with parts by LASERTEC 30 SLM. The challengers will travel 3,000 km from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south over a period of one week.

In order to reduce the total vehicle weight, the Wakayama University Solar Car Team selected two parts and optimized their design for AM with the help of “toDIM,” a service by Applied Technology Co, Ltd. that supports AM product development and process improvement in the manufacturing industry. DMG MORI then realized the improved design with the LASERTEC 30 SLM. Compared to conventional parts, the weight of the front caliper stay was successfully reduced by 50% and the suspension by 40%.The Wakayama University Solar Car Team is now discussing further implementation of AM technology, aiming to develop globally competitive solar cars.
