Since 2004, the Cutting Dream Contest has been bringing together users of advanced machining equipment from companies, educational institutions, and research organizations. By offering a competitive platform to study, improve, and exchange machining technologies and skills, the contest aims to spark innovation and dedication to drive continuous technological advancements worldwide.

This year, Professor Soichi Ibaraki of Hiroshima University chaired the selection committee of six judges to choose 2 winners in Production Parts Machining, 8 in Prototype & Test Cut Machining, 4 in Artistic Form Machining, 4 in Advanced Machining, and 4 in Academic Research out of 64 entries in total.

Now, we are looking forward to the award ceremony on Tuesday, November 18, at Tokyo Kaikan (Marunouchi, Tokyo), where the winners will receive certificates and monetary prizes.
All entries will be on display at the DMG MORI booth at MECT 2025 from October 22 to 25, and after the award ceremony, at the DMG MORI Tokyo Global Headquarters (Shiomi, Tokyo).

「Miniature Precision Ball Screw」 KSS Co., Ltd.
We highly appreciated the high level of processing and assembly skill for the mass production of small ball screws used in the joints of medical robots. The high accuracy becomes clear from the difficult inner diameter nut machining, the assembly of fine parts, and the smooth joint movement.

「Ultra-fine Brass Hair」 TOTO LTD.
It's impressive to see brass machined into a fine φ0.06 mm rod shape of 45 mm length only on a normal lathe. Clearly, the processing method was carefully adjusted with chip disposal and workpiece deflection in mind.

「Metal Phoenix」 CASTEM CO., LTD
It takes a high level of skill and artistry to machine such a fine and complex phoenix out of ultra-hard material. The tips of the wings capture a sense of movement, and the eyes, feet, and tail show great detail.

<Judges’ comment for the winner of Gold Prize>
「Metal Rose」 Industrial Research Institute of Shizuoka Prefecture, Hamamatsu
This artistic piece was realized by scanning flower roses with X-ray CT and 3D modeling the inner structure and thin shape of the petals. The creation of the 3D model, the adjustment of the support structures, and the selection of the processing conditions, including surface treatment, are well done.
